Infection Control

Many Infection Control teams are now utilising ATP as a valuable tool for training and education purposes.

The palm sized SystemSURE Plus device works by detecting levels of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), a biochemical found in all living organisms and biological residues. If ATP is detected on a cleaned area it means the cleaning was not effective and the area is a potential hazard.

The ATP method is quick, simple and easy to do. A swab is taken of the region to be tested using a sampling device, which is then inserted into the hand held instrument. The result is shown as a number and can be displayed as a simple pass, caution or fail display.

The ATP sits well, alongside existing glow technology for hand wash training as part of "clean your hands" campaign. A swab is taken of the hand prior to handwashing to demonstrate how "dirty" an unwashed hand can become. A second swab is used following correct handwashing procedure and clearly demonstrates the effect to which handwashing reduces contaminants on the hand. In some cases correct handwashing can reduce the ATP reading from thousands to less then 50. This clearly shows the effect that good hand wash practice can have. Infection Control can also utilise ATP testing to "troubleshoot". There may be an area within a hospital that frequently sees outbreaks or high plate counts with no obvious reason. The SystemSURE handheld can be used in these areas to detect where there may be an overlooked risk. A high reading demonstrates there is soil in an area and therefore the potential of microbiological growth. The ATP readings are available in seconds so a full search of the area can be done in minutes to determine potential areas where microbiological growth may occur.

Deep Clean to Keep Clean: Deep Clean Teams

An area is deep cleaned to remove all traces of soil and contaminants. How does the team know that this cleaning has indeed been ‘deep’ enough to remove this soil? Hygiena SystemSURE Plus ATP monitoring is extremely valuable in this arena. Once cleaned, an area can be ATP tested within seconds to demonstrate that the area has been successfully cleaned.

The palm sized SystemSURE Plus device works by detecting levels of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), a biochemical found in all living organisms and biological residues. If ATP is detected on a cleaned surface then it means the cleaning was not effective and that the area is a potential hazard

Hygiena SystemSURE Plus is quick, simple and easy to do. A swab is taken of the area to be tested using a swab-sampling device, which is then inserted into the hand held instrument. The result is shown in 15 seconds, as a number and can be displayed as a simple pass, caution or fail display.
